Saturday Night-
We made one pass with new changes- new rear end gear, new converter, no scoops, just velocity stacks. Made our first run, dropped a hole early, ran a 6.9, but got a decent reaction time so we qualified #1.
Sunday-
Got to the track early, and started heating the oil. Apparently some of the nitro had remained in the oil tank, within 15min we heard a loud explosion. The oil tank had blown up, but fortunately only bent the band clamp that held it together but we were able to fix it. Because the oil and engine were cold, and we run so much lead, we spent over an hour trying to get it to start, missing the second qualifying run. Finally we got it to start, warmed it up, made a tire change to smaller tires, and got it out on the track. We had nothing to lose so we took a shot at the tree but red lit (By then, Eserini has taken over the #1 spot). The car left the line, shook the tires, shifted to second, stopped shaking, dropped a cylinder, ran a 7.6-something. Got the car back, did a turn around, changed back to big tires and added more lead. First round of eliminations, we were against Folts Schuh. We staged the car, saw the top beam go on, saw the second go on, then go out. We were afraid to move. Folts said he saw the same thing, started motioned to both of us to move forward. The top beam went out (deep stage), then our light went red, Dave moved forward, tree came down, and he automatically won. We went into horrible tire shake in first, lifted into second, dropped a hole, ran a 7.6.
Then we asked for an exhibition run... Another racer told us the lights screwed up for him as well. Folts asked if we should re run, but with our tire shake there’s no way we could have run, so to us, he had won and we left it at that. We did an exhibition run, lowered tire pressure, immediately put a hole out, and ran a 7.60. Back at the shop, we found out #1 and #2 cylinders were hurt. We’re working on that now for Woodburn. We are also going to change the Mag and take lead back out of it.
