Tech Tips with Steve!

- Categories : Tech-Tips

We get a lot of the same questions asked around the shop... so we decided we would share them with all of you, just in case you had the same ones! We asked all the members of Wolfgang some things they get asked the most, then we had Steve answer them in an exclusive interview. Here are the first 5 FAQ:

1. What type of oil should I run?
Straight 30 weight in the winter (below 90 degrees F outside) and Straight 40 weight in the summer (above 90 degrees F outside) DO NOT run a multi-grade in your air cooled VW! We suggest this because if you break the viscosity of the multi-grade, you will lose oil pressure. This does not apply to water cooled VWs.

2.What should I set my timing at?
28 degrees total advance with the engine revved. Air cooled can handle up to 32 degrees... but 32.1 puts it in melt down mode! We suggest 28 because it is safe. You might give up a little top end, but you gain some bottom end.

3. What is the best RPM range for driving for extended time?
3200-3800. At below 3200, the fan could be putting out too much air. At above 3800, the fan won't put out more air. Engines don't want to run above 3800 for extended periods.

4. What is the best engine size for a "daily driver"?
2007, hands down. This engine size is like a tractor! A 2007 has good bottom end, an incredible mid-range, great mileage.... and, oh hey, IT'S RELIABLE!

5.How hot is too hot for oil temperature?
200 degrees is the maximum you want to let it reach. At 210 degrees, you should probably change your driving habits. At 215 degrees, you need to pull over.

We hope this helped some of you! We are going to continue answering FAQ's and if you have any yourself, please write us! You never know, your question could seriously help someone else out too!
