There are more things to worry about when buying a fixer upper than the smog laws in your area, here are some tips.
- Look everywhere for rust, under the floor mats, under the vehicle and dont forget to check the lower rockers.
- Is there damage? Look for dents, Bondo, waves etc. The best way to check for damage is to try to look at the backside of each panel.
- Is the vehicle complete? The little things add up in a hurry. If all of the parts are there its a bonus. Make a list of what parts are missing and check prices. Its no bargain if too much is missing.
- Assume that the front end, the rear end and the engine are shot. If any of the above is good, then thats another bonus. Never take the word of the seller, even if its your cousins best friend from high school.
- Look for improvements that have been done, such changes as a 6v vehicle to a 12v, better shocks, new wheels, etc.
- If you like the current paint job and the interior, its a plus. You will save yourself money in the end unless of course you have the skills to paint or upholster vehicles.
- Last but not least, the price. Check around, local papers, vehicle parts stores bulletins and of course your friends. Be sure you pay a fair price.
